** 18_T14_我要的是葫芦/Wǒ yào de shì húlu/Lo que yo quiero son calabazas/What I Want Is Gourds **
/Había una vez un hombre que plantó una calabacera./Once upon a time a man planted a gourd vine.
/Su largo y fino tallo se llenó de hojas verdes y dio unas cuantas florecitas blancas como la nieve./Its long, thin vine was covered in green leaves and grew a few snow-white flowers.
When the flowers withered, a few little gourds hung from the vine.
/¡Qué calabacitas tan bonitas! Aquel hombre iba a verlas varias veces al día./What lovely little gourds! The man went to look at them several times a day.
有一天,他看见叶子上爬着一些蚜虫,心里想,有几个虫子怕什么!/Un día vio unos pulgones en las hojas y pensó: «¡Por unos cuantos bichos, qué más da!»./One day he saw some greenfly crawling on the leaves and thought: what's a few bugs!
¡Ojalá os hagáis más grandes que una calabaza gigante!»./Staring at the little gourds, he said to himself: “My little gourds, grow, grow! I hope you grow bigger than a giant pumpkin!”
一个邻居看见了,对他说你别光盯着葫芦了,叶子上生了蚜虫,快治一治吧!/Un vecino lo vio y le dijo: «No mires solo las calabazas; las hojas tienen pulgones, ¡trátalas enseguida!»./A neighbour saw this and said: “Don't just stare at the gourds. The leaves have greenfly – treat them quickly!”
Lo que yo quiero son calabazas»./The man was puzzled and said: “What? Do the bugs on the leaves need treating? What I want is gourds.”
A few days later there was even more greenfly on the leaves.
The little gourds slowly turned yellow and fell off one by one.

Pedagogical Commentary: What I Want Is Gourds: things are connected:
1. The character's words: The man says “有几个虫子怕什么 (yǒu jǐ gè chóngzi pà shénme) ” and “叶子上的虫还用治 (yèzi shang de chóng hái yòng zhì) ? Students read them in his careless tone and compare them with “有几个虫子不可怕” and “叶子上的虫不用治”.
2. Beginning and end: At first the little gourds are “so lovely”; at the end they “slowly turn yellow and fall off one by one”. Students find the cause: the greenfly on the leaves wasn't treated in time.
3. The moral: The leaves and the gourds are connected: only healthy leaves give good gourds. Students think of other things in life that are connected.
