** 28_T25B_狐狸养鸡(二)/Húli yǎng jī (èr)/El zorro que criaba pollos (II)/The Fox Who Raised Chicks (2) **
/Pasaban los días y los pollitos iban creciendo./The days went by, and the chicks gradually grew up.
/Sobre todo a unos gallitos ya se les veía la cresta roja y unas plumas de la cola bonitas y tiesas./Especially some of the young cockerels – you could already see their red combs and fine, stiff tail feathers.
But at night the chickens still huddled up beside the fox.
By now the fox was getting a bit fed up with the chickens: silly things, why don't they run away?
/De repente se le ocurrió una idea: entrenar a los pollos para que fueran como pájaros./Suddenly he had an idea: he would train the chickens to be like birds.
If, when the time comes, they can't fly like birds and I catch them, they can't blame me for being heartless.”
/Dicho y hecho: el zorro empezó a enseñar a volar a los pollos./No sooner said than done, the fox began teaching the chickens to fly.
But the chickens made a racket, all squawking at once: “Why, why, fly, fly?”
No volamos, no volamos, no volamos!»./“We won't fly, we won't fly, we won't fly!”
/El zorro, furioso, les enseñó los dientes./The fox, furious, bared his teeth at the chickens.
It was the first time the chickens had seen the fox look so fierce; thinking he was really angry, they had no choice but to practise obediently.
So another sight appeared in front of the hill: the fox chased the chickens until, squawking and flapping their wings, they ran everywhere – and with one more push they really did fly up into the sky.
/¡Ah, qué bien se está volando!/Oh, flying feels so good!
The meadow, the trees, the distant stream and the clouds in the sky – everything began to move, as if it were alive.
After flying a circle, the chickens all landed beside the fox and vied with each other to describe the feeling of flying.
/Un pollo hasta le dijo al zorro: «¡Vuela tú también, es divertidísimo!»./One chicken even said to the fox: “You fly too – it's great fun!”
The fox didn't know whether to be cross or laugh; looking at the chickens growing plumper by the day, he felt torn.
He really wanted to tell the chickens that he was a fox and that by nature he loved eating chicken.
He very, very much wanted to eat them, but he just couldn't say it – and even if he did, the chickens probably wouldn't believe him.
No había sido él quien les había mandado aprender a volar?/Wasn't it he who had made them learn to fly?
/Mejor aprovechar la noche, morderlos y comérselos./He might as well bite them in the dark and eat them.
/Pero en cuanto llegaba la noche y veía a los pollos apretujados a su lado durmiendo tranquilos, de ninguna manera era capaz de hincarles el diente./But as soon as night came and he saw the chickens huddled beside him, sleeping peacefully, he just couldn't bring himself to bite.
/El zorro lo estaba pasando fatal./The fox was in utter misery.
/Una noche negra como boca de lobo, el zorro se escabulló sin hacer ruido./On a pitch-dark night, the fox quietly slipped away.
So this sight appeared on the meadow in front of the hill: a flock of chickens searching everywhere, cheeping, looking for a fox.
