/Una noche de hace varios cientos de años, la gente de Bruselas cantaba y bailaba en la plaza frente al ayuntamiento, celebrando la victoria, porque habían expulsado a los enemigos extranjeros./One night several hundred years ago, the people of Brussels were singing and dancing in the square in front of the town hall, celebrating victory, because they had driven out the foreign enemy.
/Pero el enemigo no se resignaba, y un malvado puso muchos explosivos en el sótano del ayuntamiento, queriendo volarlo./But the enemy hadn't given up, and a villain placed a lot of explosives in the town hall's basement, wanting to blow it up.
/El malvado llevó la mecha hasta el patio junto al ayuntamiento, la encendió y salió corriendo./The villain led the fuse to the courtyard beside the town hall, lit it, and ran away.
At this moment, a boy named Julien went to play in the courtyard, and seeing the fuse sparking, immediately understood what was happening.
他Tā想xiǎng找zhǎo人rén,可是Kěshì院子里yuànzilǐ连lián一个人yígerén也yě没有méiyǒu;他Tā大声dàshēng喊hǎn,可是Kěshì广场上的guǎngchǎngshangde人们rénmen根本gēnběn听不见tīngbujiàn;他Tā想xiǎng用yòng水shuǐ浇灭jiāomiè导火线dǎohuǒxiàn,可是Kěshì上哪儿shàngnǎr去qù找zhǎo水shuǐ呢ne?/Quiso buscar a alguien, pero en el patio no había nadie; gritó fuerte, pero la gente en la plaza no podía oírlo en absoluto; quiso apagar la mecha con agua, pero ¿dónde iba a encontrar agua?/He wanted to find someone, but there was no one at all in the courtyard; he shouted loudly, but the people in the square couldn't hear him at all; he wanted to put out the fuse with water, but where would he find water?

Pedagogical Commentary: Cao Chong weighs an elephant: the wisdom of comparison and alternative thinking: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 称 (chēng) or 象 (xiàng) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 官 (guān) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
