Wénguòzéxǐ/Alegrarse al oír las propias faltas/Delighted to Hear of One's Own Faults
/Hua Luogeng fue un famoso matemático chino, y su virtud de ser humilde, amante del estudio y de alegrarse al oír señalar sus propios errores es ampliamente conocida./Hua Luogeng was a famous Chinese mathematician, and his virtue of being humble, fond of learning, and delighted to hear of his own mistakes pointed out is widely known.
In 1936, when Hua Luogeng went to study at Cambridge University in England, in order to learn broader scientific knowledge, he gave up the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree.
He attended classes as an auditor, while extensively reading and studying other scientific knowledge.
In just two short years, he successively published more than a dozen papers, and proposed “Hua's theorem,” and also thoroughly solved a major problem posed by Gauss, the “king of mathematics” of 19th-century Europe, thereby causing a sensation at Cambridge, and being hailed as “the pride of Cambridge.”
/Hua Luogeng tuvo éxito, pero siempre siguió siendo humilde y amante del estudio, sin sentirse nunca satisfecho./Hua Luogeng succeeded, but he always remained humble and fond of learning, never satisfied.
/Una vez, el joven matemático Chen Jingrun, mientras estudiaba con esmero una famosa obra matemática de Hua Luogeng, descubrió de repente un error difícil de percibir./Once, young mathematician Chen Jingrun, while carefully studying a famous mathematical work by Hua Luogeng, suddenly discovered an error that was hard to notice.
究竟Jiūjìng是shì华罗庚的Huà Luógēngde笔误bǐwù,还是háishi自己zìjǐ的de知识zhīshi浅薄qiǎnbó?/¿Era realmente un error de escritura de Hua Luogeng, o era su propio conocimiento superficial?/Was it really a slip of the pen by Hua Luogeng, or was it his own shallow knowledge?
/Chen Jingrun no durmió en toda la noche, verificando repetidamente los cálculos, hasta que finalmente se convenció de que su interpretación era correcta./Chen Jingrun stayed awake all night, repeatedly checking the calculations, and finally became convinced that his interpretation was correct.
So, he took up his pen and wrote a paper, and attached a letter, humbly saying to Hua Luogeng: “The tiny speck of dust that has fallen from a bright star, I am willing to help wipe it away for you.”
/Hua Luogeng recibió el artículo y la carta de Chen Jingrun, y los leyó de un tirón, aplaudiendo entusiasmado sin poder contenerse./Hua Luogeng received Chen Jingrun's paper and letter, and read them in one sitting, unable to help slapping the table in admiration.
Because since his book had been published, it had passed before the eyes of countless famous mathematicians around the world, and apart from hearing a series of compliments, he had heard almost no criticism, not even half a sentence.
But now, there was a young scholar from his own country, just past twenty, who had bravely raised a criticism against him, and presented his own views; what a wonderful thing this was!
/La ciencia no puede permitirse ni un ápice de arrogancia; la ciencia necesita aún más el espíritu de buscar la verdad a partir de los hechos./Science cannot tolerate even a bit of arrogance; science needs even more the spirit of seeking truth from facts.
So, Hua Luogeng immediately wrote a letter to arrange to meet Chen Jingrun.
Very soon, they became a pair of good friends within the kingdom of mathematics.

Pedagogical Commentary: Confucius seeks knowledge: the virtue of humility and love of learning: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 孔 (kǒng) or 哲 (zhé) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 承 (chéng) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
