中国人Zhōngguórén的de姓xìng和hé名míng/Los apellidos y nombres de los chinos/Chinese Surnames and Given Names
/China posee la tradición cultural de apellidos más antigua del mundo./China has the longest-standing surname culture tradition in the world.
Most of the surnames existing in China today had already appeared more than three thousand years ago.
According to statistics from the newly published “Great Dictionary of Chinese Surnames,” there have been a total of 11,969 surnames throughout Chinese history, of which 5,327 are single-character surnames, 4,329 are double-character surnames, and 2,313 are other types.
However, the surnames in common use today are no more than about two hundred, and among them, the most commonly used single-character surnames number only just over a hundred.
According to data published by the People's Daily in March 1987, people surnamed Li are the most numerous in China, followed by those surnamed Wang and Zhang; there are also many people surnamed Liu, Chen, Yang, Zhao, Huang, Zhou, Wu, and others.
In the past, when Chinese people named girls, they always used characters like “flower, fragrance, zither, beautiful, brilliant”; for boys, they mostly used words like “Iron Pillar, Gold Lock, Big Mountain, Stone.”
This was because people hoped girls would grow up pretty and gentle; and hoped boys would be sturdy, and that when they grew up they could achieve great things and have a promising future.
/Más tarde, la gente se volvió cada vez más exigente al poner nombre a sus hijos, especialmente las familias educadas, que a menudo querían darles un nombre con un significado especial./Later, people became more and more particular about naming their children, especially educated families, who often wanted to give their children a name with a certain deeper meaning.
/El famoso geólogo chino Li Siguang se llamaba originalmente Li Zhongkui./The famous Chinese geologist Li Siguang was originally named Li Zhongkui.
He was clever and studious, and at age 14 he signed up for the exam for a government-funded scholarship to study in Japan, and came out first place.
¿Qué podía hacer?/While filling out the registration form, he mistakenly wrote his age, “fourteen,” in the name field. What could he do?
He had no money to buy another form, so, thinking quickly, he changed “十” (ten) to “李” (Li, his surname); but he felt “Li Si” (李四) didn't sound good, so he added the character “光” (light), and “四光” came to mean “light shining in all four directions.”
/Así, Li Zhongkui se convirtió en el futuro Li Siguang, famoso en todo el país./This is how Li Zhongkui became the later world-renowned Li Siguang.
/El famoso compositor chino Nie Er se llamaba originalmente Nie Shouxin./The famous Chinese composer Nie Er was originally named Nie Shouxin.
/Más tarde, como todos decían que tenía el oído especialmente agudo, cambió su nombre a Nie Er (nota: en aquel entonces “聂” se escribía “聶”), como si tuviera orejas por todo el cuerpo./Later, because everyone said his hearing (ears) was especially sharp, he changed his name to Nie Er (note: “聂” was written “聶” at the time), as if his whole body were covered in ears.
/No es de extrañar que Nie Er llegara después a alcanzar tan grandes logros en la música./No wonder Nie Er later achieved such great accomplishments in music.
