Měilì de dà cǎoyuán/La hermosa gran pradera/The Beautiful Grassland **
We flew by plane to Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China, then changed to a small plane, flying at low altitude for more than an hour, before finally reaching our destination — the vast Xilingol Grassland.
The airport on the grassland was very simple, just a low building and a small tarmac.
The grassland airport had no runway, planes taxied for takeoff and landing right on the grassland.
In the past, driving on the grassland had no real “road” to speak of either, it was like being in a vast, boundless square, free to speed in any direction.
However, since China's reform and opening up, the network of roads built on the grassland extends in all directions, the wide and flat paved roads are extremely beautiful, and our car often maintained a speed of ninety kilometers per hour flying along the road.
/Tal como imaginaba, la pradera era hermosísima./Just as I had imagined, the grassland was extremely beautiful.
/Conducir por la pradera era como navegar por el mar, en todas direcciones siempre está el horizonte, y nunca se llega al final./Driving on the grassland was like sailing on the sea, all around is always the horizon, one never reaches the end.
/Recorriendo el camino, la interminable gran pradera a ambos lados de la carretera parecía cubierta con una gruesa alfombra verde./Driving along the road, the boundless grassland on both sides of the highway seemed covered with a thick green carpet.
The flowers competing to bloom were of every color, very beautiful.
/De vez en cuando aparecía un pequeño lago, con agua azul, como si un pedazo del cielo se hubiera disuelto en él./Every so often a small lake appeared, its water deeply blue, as if a piece of sky had dissolved into it.
And that sky, in turn, resembled that blue lake, with pure white clouds floating above, like flocks of sheep on the grassland, gentle and lovely.
When the breeze blew, the herds of horses, cattle, and sheep would run following the moving shadows of the clouds, and this painting of the grassland became filled with the vitality of life.
The grassland is a beautiful landscape painting, and what attracts the most in this painting is, of course, the people.
After driving for more than half a day across the sparsely populated grassland, a Mongolian yurt finally appeared, and we couldn't help feeling excited, the fatigue of the journey instantly swept away.
/El dueño de la yurta era un hombre que amaba profundamente la pradera, se llamaba Bate./The owner of the yurt was a man who deeply loved the grassland, his name was Bate.
/“Bate” significa “héroe”./“Bate” means “hero.”
/No habíamos conversado ni unas pocas frases, y ya nos sentíamos tan familiarizados como viejos amigos./We hadn't chatted more than a few sentences, and already felt as familiar as old friends.
He told us that his marriage was very happy, and that after marrying they had two children, who were already attending school.
We referred to his wife as “sister-in-law,” she was a typical virtuous wife and good mother.
They loved their children very much, the two adults shouldered the heavy burden of supporting the whole family, so that the children could pursue a better future.
/Habían contratado un pastizal, criaban ganado y ovejas, y llevaban una vida bastante próspera./They had contracted a pasture, raised cattle and sheep, and lived a fairly prosperous life.
He was originally a city dweller, and had been on the grassland for more than twenty years; seeing the grassland become ever more beautiful, and life getting better day by day, they couldn't bear to leave, so they stayed on the grassland.
/Un poeta anónimo, al regresar de la pradera, escribió estos versos: “No me digas cuán hermosa es la pradera, con solo alzar la vista, surge un nuevo verso.”/An anonymous poet, returning from the grassland, wrote these lines: “Don't tell me how beautiful the grassland is, just raise your head and look, a new line of poetry appears.”
/De verdad, ante la gran pradera de “cielo vasto y sin límites, campos infinitos, el viento dobla la hierba y se ven vacas y ovejas”, sentí que era como un poema, como un sueño, y no quería irme durante mucho tiempo./Truly, facing the vast grassland of “the sky boundless, the wilds endless, the wind bends the grass and reveals cattle and sheep,” I felt as if in a poem, as if in a dream, and for a long time did not wish to leave.
There is a beautiful carpet laid out in the living room.
After working all day, he feels very exhausted.
/Apenas habíamos charlado un poco y ya nos sentíamos como viejos amigos./We had barely chatted when we already felt as close as old friends.
/Tienen arrendado un pastizal, crían vacas y ovejas, y viven con bastante holgura./They have contracted a pasture, herd cattle and sheep, and live quite well.
