Long, long ago, the sky god and a demon fought a battle on a tall mountain near the equator. The demon hated humanity deeply, while the sky god loved humanity, so the demon always wanted to drive the sky god away.
/Un día, el demonio, viendo que el dios del cielo se había quedado dormido, prendió un gran fuego en la montaña./One day, the demon, seeing that the sky god had fallen asleep, set a great fire on the mountain.

/El dios del cielo se despertó sobresaltado, e inmediatamente usó su magia para invocar rayos y truenos; al instante relampagueó y tronó, cayeron lluvia y nieve juntas, y el gran fuego se apagó rápidamente./The sky god woke with a start, and immediately used his magic to summon thunder and lightning; instantly there was thunder and lightning, rain and snow mixed together, and the great fire was quickly extinguished.
Before long, ice and snow capped the summit, and this mountain became a snow mountain.

And at the foot of the mountain is yet another kind of scenery: everywhere there are vast stretches of primeval forest, and on the mountain slopes among the trees, coffee, bananas, and tea trees are also grown.

Pedagogical Commentary: Mount Everest: the spirit of exploration and geographic wonders: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 藏 (Zàng) or 挺 (tǐng) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 洁 (jié) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
