“老奶奶Lǎonǎinai,您nín磨mó这根zhègēn铁棒tiěbàng做什么zuò shénme呀ya?”/“Abuela, ¿para qué está afilando esa barra de hierro?”/“Grandma, what are you grinding that iron rod for?”
老奶奶Lǎonǎinai连lián头tóu也yě不bù抬tái,只顾zhǐgù自己zìjǐ一个劲儿地yí ge jìnr de磨mó,边biān磨mó边biān说shuō:/La anciana ni siquiera levantó la cabeza, solo seguía afilando sin parar, y mientras afilaba decía:/The old woman didn't even raise her head; she just kept grinding on and on, and as she ground, she said:
I'm going to grind this iron rod into a needle.”

Pedagogical Commentary: Two ancient poems: imagination and courtly atmosphere: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 帝 (dì) or 朝 (cháo) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 彩 (cǎi) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
