Mǎyǐ hé zhīliǎo/La hormiga y la cigarra/The Ant and the Cicada
The scorching sun shone down on the earth, and in the boundless fields, golden grain grew everywhere.
/La hormiga y la cigarra eran vecinas. De la mañana a la noche, la hormiga estaba siempre ocupada llevando grano a casa para prepararse para el invierno, mientras que la cigarra se pasaba el día entero cantando y bailando, entretenida jugando, sin hacer ni un poco de trabajo./The ant and the cicada were neighbors. From morning to night, the ant was always busy carrying grain home to prepare for winter, while the cicada spent the whole day singing and dancing, busy playing, not doing a bit of work.
/Aunque las dos eran vecinas, no tenían ningún trato entre ellas./Although the two were neighbors, they had no contact with each other.
/Llegó el invierno, y la hormiga se quedaba cómodamente en casa pasando el invierno./Winter arrived, and the ant stayed comfortably at home for the winter.
/Una mañana, salió el sol y la hormiga sacó el grano a secar./One morning, the sun came out, and the ant took out the grain to dry it.
一只Yìzhī饿得è de发慌fāhuāng的de知了zhīliǎo飞fēi了过来le guòlái,有气无力地yǒuqìwúlìde说shuō:/Una cigarra, hambrienta y desfallecida, llegó volando y dijo con voz débil:/A cicada, starving and weak, flew over and said feebly:
“我的Wǒ de好hǎo邻居línjū,能néng借jiè点儿diǎnr粮食liángshi给gěi我wǒ吗ma?/“Mi buen vecino, ¿podrías prestarme un poco de grano?/“My good neighbor, could you lend me some grain?
/Ya llevo varios días sin comer una comida decente.”/I haven't had a proper meal in several days.”
“难道Nándào你nǐ自己zìjǐ没有méiyǒu准备zhǔnbèi粮食liángshi吗ma?”/“¿Acaso no preparaste tú misma tu propio grano?”, dijo la hormiga./“Didn't you prepare your own grain?” said the ant.
蚂蚁mǎyǐ说shuō,”秋天Qiūtiān,田野tiányě里lǐ那么nàme多duō粮食liángshi,你nǐ为什么wèishénme不bù搬bān一些yìxiē回家huíjiā呢ne?”/“En otoño había tanto grano en los campos, ¿por qué no te llevaste un poco a casa?”/“In autumn there was so much grain in the fields, why didn't you carry some home?”
In autumn I was busy playing every day, having a wonderful time, and had no time to carry grain...” said the cicada.
The ant interrupted the cicada and said, “If you didn't work in autumn, of course you have nothing to eat in winter.
We only help hardworking people; we don't help those who don't want to work.
你Nǐ还是háishi走zǒu吧ba!”/¡Será mejor que te vayas!”/You'd better leave!”
Pedagogical Commentary: Gold buried in the ground: the value of hard work: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 埋 (mái) or 金 (jīn) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 虽 (suī) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
