/Cuvier era un famoso zoólogo francés./Cuvier was a famous French zoologist.
/Una vez, uno de sus alumnos quiso gastarle una broma./Once, one of his students wanted to play a joke on him.
So, on a quiet, late night, that student disguised himself as a monster with two big horns and a huge gaping mouth, and sneaked into Cuvier's room.
/Cuvier estaba durmiendo, y no se dio cuenta de nada en absoluto./Cuvier was sleeping, and didn't notice anything at all.
/Después de entrar en la habitación, el alumno soltó de repente un grito extraño, fingiendo que quería devorar a alguien./After entering the room, the student suddenly let out a strange yell, pretending he wanted to eat someone.
居维叶Jūwéiyè被bèi吵醒了chǎoxǐngle,他Tā先是xiānshì一惊yìjīng,考虑kǎolǜ要yào怎样zěnyàng才cái能néng迅速xùnsù而ér安全ānquán地de逃走táozǒu,可Kě当dāng他tā借着jièzhe灯光dēngguāng看了看kànlekàn那nà头tóu“怪兽guàishòu”后hòu,突然tūrán笑了xiàole起来qǐlái,说shuō:“原来Yuánlái是shì个gè吃chī草cǎo的de家伙jiāhuo,我Wǒ又yòu何必hébì怕pà你nǐ呢ne?”/Cuvier se despertó sobresaltado por el ruido; al principio se asustó, y pensó en cómo escapar rápida y seguramente; pero cuando, a la luz de la lámpara, miró bien a aquel “monstruo”, de repente se echó a reír y dijo: “Resulta que es un bicho que come hierba, ¿por qué habría de temerte?”/Cuvier was startled awake by the noise; at first he was frightened, and thought about how to escape quickly and safely, but when, by the lamplight, he took a good look at that “monster,” he suddenly burst out laughing and said: “So it's a grass-eating creature, why would I need to fear you?”
After saying this, he went back to sleep peacefully.
/El alumno no tuvo más remedio que salir sigilosamente de la habitación./The student had no choice but to sneak quietly out of the room.
第二天Dì'èrtiān,学生xuésheng忍不住rěnbuzhù问wèn居维叶Jūwéiyè:“老师Lǎoshī,昨天晚上zuótiānwǎnshang,你nǐ屋里wūlǐ没有méiyǒu钻进去zuānjìnqù一只yìzhī怪兽guàishòu吗ma?”/Al día siguiente, el alumno no pudo evitar preguntarle a Cuvier: “Maestro, ¿anoche no se coló ningún monstruo en su habitación?”/The next day, the student couldn't help asking Cuvier: “Teacher, last night, didn't a monster sneak into your room?”
I study living creatures, so of course I welcome all kinds of monsters to come visit my room, whether by day or by night.”
那个nàge学生xuésheng又yòu问wèn:“你Nǐ怎么zěnme一看yíkàn就jiù知道zhīdào那nà个怪物gè guàiwù只zhǐ吃chī草cǎo,不会búhuì吃chī人rén呢ne?”/El alumno volvió a preguntar: “¿Cómo supo con solo mirarlo que ese monstruo solo comía hierba y no se comería a las personas?”/The student asked again: “How did you know just by looking that the monster only ate grass and wouldn't eat people?”
/Cuvier respondió: “Basta con observar con cuidado sus cuatro extremidades para poder saber si es o no un animal herbívoro.”/Cuvier replied: “You only need to carefully observe its four limbs to be able to tell whether it's a herbivorous animal or not.”
/El alumno dijo, algo avergonzado: “Por favor, maestro, perdóneme; mi travesura le asustó.”/The student said, a bit embarrassed: “Please forgive me, teacher; my mischief startled you.”
Pedagogical Commentary: Darwin: scientific exploration and observing nature: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 尔 (ěr) or 盛 (shèng) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 惹 (rě) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
