/Cuenta la leyenda que hace mucho tiempo había una niña llamada Li Ji./Legend has it that long ago there was a little girl named Li Ji.
By the age of 12, she had already mastered excellent martial arts skills.
/Detrás del pueblo donde vivía Li Ji había una montaña alta, en la montaña había una gran cueva, y en la cueva vivía una gran serpiente venenosa que solía salir a comerse a la gente./Behind the village where Li Ji lived there was a tall mountain, and on the mountain there was a big cave, and in the cave lived a large venomous snake that often came out to eat people.
李寄Lǐ Jì想xiǎng:怎样Zěnyàng才cái能néng杀死shāsǐ这zhè条tiáo大dà毒蛇dúshé,不bú让ràng它tā出来chūlái伤人shāngrén呢ne?/Li Ji pensó: ¿cómo podría matar a esta gran serpiente venenosa, para que no saliera a hacer daño?/Li Ji thought: how could she kill this large venomous snake, so it wouldn't come out to hurt people?
/Le dio muchas vueltas, y por fin se le ocurrió un plan./She thought it over and over, and finally came up with a plan.
/Un día, Li Ji hizo una gran bola de arroz, cogió una espada preciosa, y también se llevó a su gran perro de caza, y subió sola a la montaña./One day, Li Ji made a big rice ball, took a precious sword, and also brought her big hunting dog, and went up the mountain alone by herself.
/Llegó a la entrada de la cueva y tiró la gran bola de arroz dentro./She arrived at the mouth of the cave and threw the big rice ball inside.
This rice ball she had made with her own hands: inside she had put poison, and outside she had coated it with a layer of honey, so it was fragrant and sweet.
That large venomous snake was already starving, and was just getting ready to come out of the cave to find something to eat, when it suddenly smelled a fragrance, and crawled toward the mouth of the cave, swallowing that big rice ball in one gulp.
/Poco después, el veneno hizo efecto, y la gran serpiente venenosa, de dolor, se retorcía sin parar dentro de la cueva./Before long, the poison took effect, and the large venomous snake writhed in pain, rolling around inside the cave.
/Li Ji, viendo que había llegado el momento, hizo un ademán con la mano, y el gran perro de caza se lanzó hacia adelante, mordiendo con fuerza el cuello de la gran serpiente venenosa sin soltarlo./Seeing that the moment had come, Li Ji waved her hand, and the big hunting dog rushed forward, clamping its jaws tightly onto the large venomous snake's neck.
/Li Ji blandió su espada, apuntó a la cabeza de la gran serpiente venenosa y le dio varios tajos seguidos, matando así a golpe de espada a aquella gran serpiente venenosa que se comía a la gente./Li Ji swung her sword, aimed at the head of the large venomous snake, and struck it several times in a row, killing that man-eating venomous snake with her blade.
From then on, no venomous snake ever came out of the mountain to eat people again. Everyone praised Li Ji as a girl who was both clever and brave.
Pedagogical Commentary: The farmer and the snake: a fable about good, evil, and consequences: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 蛇 (shé) or 厚 (hòu) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 冻 (dòng) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
