A long, long time ago, there was a painter who was painting a tiger; just after he finished drawing the tiger's head, a guest came.
/El invitado lo vio pintando y le pidió que dibujara un caballo./The guest saw him painting and asked him to draw a horse.
/Entonces, el pintor dibujó el cuerpo de un caballo detrás de la cabeza del tigre./So, the painter drew the body of a horse behind the tiger's head.
客人Kèrén看kàn了le以后yǐhòu,吃惊chījīng地de问道wèndào:“先生Xiānsheng,你nǐ画huà的de是shì马mǎ还是háishi虎hǔ?”/Después de verlo, el invitado preguntó sorprendido: “Señor, ¿lo que ha dibujado es un caballo o un tigre?”/After looking at it, the guest asked in surprise: “Sir, is what you drew a horse or a tiger?”
/El pintor sonrió y dijo: “Es un caballo y también un tigre, un 'caballo-tigre' (regular/descuidado)”./The painter smiled and said: “It is both a horse and a tiger, so-so (careless).”
/El invitado negó con la cabeza y se fue./The guest shook his head and left.
After the guest left, the painter hung this painting on the wall.
他Tā的de大dà儿子érzi回来huílái了le,问wèn他tā:“爸爸Bàba,你nǐ画huà的de是shì什么shénme?”/Su hijo mayor regresó y le preguntó: “Papá, ¿qué es lo que has dibujado?”/His eldest son came back and asked him: “Dad, what is it that you drew?”
/Él respondió: “Es un tigre”./He said: “It is a tiger.”
二èr儿子érzi回来huílái了le,也yě问wèn:“爸爸Bàba,你nǐ画huà的de是shì什么shénme?”/Su segundo hijo regresó y también preguntó: “Papá, ¿qué es lo que has dibujado?”/His second son came back and also asked: “Dad, what is it that you drew?”
/Y él le dijo: “Es un caballo”./He then said: “It is a horse.”
/Pocos días después, el hijo mayor del pintor fue a cazar y se encontró con un caballo; creyendo que era un tigre, mató al caballo, y como resultado tuvo que pagar mucho dinero como indemnización./A few days later, the painter's eldest son went hunting and met a horse; he thought it was a tiger and killed the horse, and as a result, he had to pay a lot of money as compensation.
/El segundo hijo se encontró con un tigre en el campo; creyendo que era un caballo, intentó montarlo, y como resultado fue mordido a muerte por el tigre./The second son ran into a tiger in the wild; he thought it was a horse and wanted to ride it, and as a result, he was bitten to death by the tiger.
The painter was extremely sad, so he took down the painting and burned it, and also wrote a poem: “The horse-tiger picture, looks like a horse and also looks like a tiger.
/El hijo mayor mató un caballo, el segundo hijo alimentó al tigre./The eldest son killed a horse, the second son fed the tiger.
/Quemo la pintura del caballo-tigre, no sean descuidados al hacer las cosas”./Burn the horse-tiger picture, don't be careless in doing things.”
Careless”, and called not being serious in doing things “mǎhu” (careless).

Pedagogical Commentary: Idiom stories: self-deception and the lesson of foolishness: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 胸 (xiōng) or 仔 (zǐ) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 况 (kuàng) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
