Lǔ Bān yǔ jùzi/Lu Ban y la sierra/Lu Ban and the Saw
/La sierra fue inventada por los chinos./The saw was invented by the Chinese.
Over two thousand four hundred years ago, people used axes to cut down trees to build houses, but big trees were thick and tall, and cutting with an axe was tiring and slow.
/Un día, un hombre llamado Lu Ban subió a la montaña a talar árboles./One day, a man named Lu Ban went up the mountain to cut trees.
/El camino era difícil, así que Lu Ban se agarraba a arbolitos y hierbas silvestres para subir./The mountain path was hard to walk, so Lu Ban grabbed onto small trees and wild grass to climb up.
/De repente sintió un dolor agudo en la palma, y al abrir la mano vio que la hierba le había hecho un corte grande, sangrando sin parar./Suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his palm, and opening his hand, he saw the grass had cut a big gash, bleeding freely.
鲁班Lǔ Bān觉得juéde很hěn奇怪qíguài,一棵yìkē小草xiǎocǎo怎么zěnme能néng割破gēpò人rén的de手shǒu呢ne?/Lu Ban pensó que era muy extraño, ¿cómo podía una hierbita cortar la mano de una persona?/Lu Ban found it strange, how could a little grass cut a person's hand?
/Miró con atención, y resultó que las hojas de esa hierba tenían dientecillos afilados a ambos lados, y al agarrarla se cortaba./Looking closely, it turned out the leaves of this grass had sharp little teeth on both edges, and grabbing it would cut you.
鲁班Lǔ Bān边看biānkàn边想biānxiǎng,如果Rúguǒ有yǒu像xiàng这种zhèzhǒng叶子yèzi一样yíyàng锋利fēnglì的de工具gōngjù,不是Búshì很快hěnkuài就jiù能néng把bǎ大树dàshù砍倒kǎndǎo吗ma?/Lu Ban miraba y pensaba: si hubiera una herramienta tan afilada como esas hojas, ¿no se podrían talar los árboles grandes mucho más rápido?/Lu Ban looked and thought: if there were a tool as sharp as these leaves, couldn't big trees be cut down much faster?
/Más tarde hizo muchos experimentos, y finalmente inventó la sierra./Later he did many experiments, and finally invented the saw.
Xiēhòuyǔ/Dicho popular con doble sentido/Two-Part Allegorical Saying
/Blandir el hacha grande ante la puerta de Lu Ban — presumir de hacha ante Lu Ban./Wielding a big axe in front of Lu Ban's door — showing off one's axe skills in front of Lu Ban.
It means showing off axe skills in front of Lu Ban, meaning to show off one's ability in front of an expert, overestimating oneself.
/Este tipo de comportamiento ridículo y poco humilde se llama 'presumir de hacha ante Lu Ban'./This kind of arrogant and ridiculous behavior is called “showing off one's axe in front of Lu Ban”.
Pedagogical Commentary: Why does the teapot lid move?: scientific experiments and curiosity: 1. The transparency of form: Observing 壶 (hú) or 盖 (gài) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly. 2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words. 3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 英 (yīng) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
