印第安Yìndì'ān图腾túténg柱zhù/El poste totémico indígena americano/The Native American Totem Pole
The Native Americans who live on Canada's west coast still preserve today an ancient culture of long-standing tradition.
They believe that each clan has a special relationship with a particular animal or plant, and that animal or plant is their protector, a symbol of the clan.
They carve the image of this animal or plant onto a round log, as an object of worship and taboo in the life of their clan; these animal and plant sculptures are precisely that clan's totem.
/La cantidad de postes totémicos que posee un indígena americano está relacionada con su posición social./The number of totem poles a Native American owns is related to their social status.
/Quien posea más postes totémicos, es el jefe de ese clan./Whoever owns the most totem poles is the chief of that clan.
And any ordinary Native American, based on the image carved on the totem pole—for example, a crow or an eagle—can tell the lineage of that totem pole's owner and his story.
/Los postes totémicos varían en altura, y cada imagen tallada es original y singular a su manera./Totem poles vary in height, and each carved image is original and unique in its own way.
For example, on one totem pole a grizzly bear is carved, and in the palm of its front paw a pair of special eyes are engraved; the clan chief would tell you that this symbolizes the soul of a chief who has already passed away.
On another totem pole, a weeping woman is carved, and in her teardrops there is also the face of her deceased child.
/También hay algunos postes totémicos cuyas figuras se burlan de personas vivas, con el propósito de expresar cierto sentimiento./There are also some totem poles whose figures mock living people, with the purpose of expressing a certain feeling.
When people step into the forest of totem poles, it's as if they see the long scroll of Native American history unfolding, because each wooden pole seems to be telling you a moving story.

Pedagogical Commentary: Maori village: indigenous culture and traditional rites:
1. The transparency of form: Observing 据 (jù) or 捕 (bǔ) helps connect the character's shape to its meaning, instead of memorizing it blindly.
2. The leap from character to word: These characters are rarely used alone; learning one opens the door to many new words.
3. Memory through context: Learning a character like 肃 (sù) together with a real sentence helps far more than memorizing its meaning in isolation.
